Office administrators play an important role in a variety of businesses. Vancouver Career College's Office Administration program gives students the skills and training they need to excel in an office management role.

The program equips students with the core customer service, organizational, and clerical skills they need to excel in this demanding and fast-paced career. Students also learn computer and office administration skills, business communications, keyboarding, and accounting software.

Students then gain on-the-job experience as part of a five-week practicum in a real-world workplace.

    • Students will gain a better understanding of themselves through an exploration of their personal attributes, transferable skills and learning styles. This course will introduce techniques for time, conflict, and stress management and develop interpersonal communication skills. Fundamental study and motivation skills will be covered, preparing students to excel in their program of choice. Students will also prepare a professional resume and learn how to write effective cover letters.
  • FCME Fundamentals of Computers 25

    • This course presents an introductory look at Windows 7 and its interface, tools and features. You will learn about the fundamentals of navigating and personalizing the interface, organizing files and folders, using media devices, and searching for information. This course relies heavily on practical hands-on activities that allow you to learn the concepts by practicing them on a regular basis.
  • MW7E Word Processing 75

    • This course will present the MS Word application interface, tools and features. You will learn about the fundamentals of word processing, document, and paragraph and character formatting, working with templates, lists and tables. This course relies heavily on hands-on practical activities which allow you to learn the concepts by practicing them on a regular basis.
  • ME7E Spreadsheets 50

    • This course explores the use of electronic spreadsheets using Microsoft Excel. This course will present the MS Excel application interface, tools and features. You will learn about the fundamentals of spreadsheets, working with data, formatting cells, working with ranges of data and cells as well as applying functions and formulas to manipulate the data in the rows and columns of a spreadsheet. In addition, you will learn how to present tabular data in a variety of different chart formats. This course relies heavily on hands-on practical activities that allows you to learn the concepts by practicing them on a regular basis.

    • Students will explore both basic and more advanced features of Microsoft PowerPoint while creating visually attractive and effective presentations.

    • Students will learn a variety of communication methods for the modern business office. Topics include written and oral communications, grammar, spelling and the communication process. Students will practice these elements by role playing and through case studies.

    • Students will examine the necessities required for operating a smooth and efficient office environment. Topics covered include basic filing techniques, telecommunications, time management and organizational skills, and the use of general office equipment.
  • BF1E Bookkeeping and Financial Accounting I 50

    • This course is an introduction to the fundamental principles and practices of accounting as a device for reporting business activity. It provides the student with an understanding of the underlying theory and principles of accounting. The construction of financial statements as they evolve from business transactions and records is emphasized using the rules of double-entry bookkeeping. In addition, adjusting journal entries and everyday transactions for both service and retail businesses are recorded coupled with the preparation of basic financial statements.

    • Students transfer their knowledge from Accounting Fundamentals and learn how to apply these concepts in a computerized environment using Simply Accounting. Some topics covered in this module include setting up a computerized accounting system, computerized journals and ledgers, income statements and balance sheets, as well as customer accounts.

    • Students transfer their knowledge from Accounting Fundamentals and learn how to apply these concepts in a computerized environment using Simply Accounting. Some topics covered in this module include setting up a computerized accounting system, computerized journals and ledgers, income statements and balance sheets, as well as customer accounts.
  • B1070 Customer Relations and Interpersonal Skills 25

    • In business, as in other interpersonal contact, the impression formed in the first 10 to 15 seconds is crucial to the success of the relationship. The importance of the customer and of customer relations to business success is examined through case studies and role-playing. Students will learn relevant theories of human behavior and how they may be applied to improve customer relations.
  • B1210 Keyboarding 50

    • Using a computer is essential in today’s office environment. This module offers the students an opportunity to familiarize themselves with a standard keyboard. For the advanced keyboarder, the module focus is to increase typing speed and accuracy.
  • L1030 Practicum 125

    • This module is for course credits but has no grade. Students will be placed in actual work places related to their field of study and will be expected to act as a regular employee for five weeks in order to gain the valuable “real world” experience that so many employers seek. Students are encouraged to find their own work experience placement; however, once placed, continuation in that placement is mandatory. (PR: All coursework)
  • CESE Career and Employment Strategies 25

    • Students will have the use of our Job Search lab which has unlimited Internet access, a job search resource library and a fax machine and phone for contacting prospective employers with your resume. Facilitators will also be made available to advise on job finding resources, interview skills and techniques, and to carry out mock interviews. Students review core program concepts and learning in order to market their skills effectively.
