Medical Professionals Get Help From New Tools

Monday, October 22, 2012

The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the US recently released new information and tools aimed at tracking deadly diseases and infections in nursing homes and other long-term care settings. According to the CDC, estimates suggest that up to 2.8 million infections occur annually in residents of nursing homes in the US.

In order to fight this problem, the organization created a new tracking component that will allow these homes to monitor healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). With the help of this tracking system, facilities will be able to monitor drug-resistant infections and worker adherence to infection and drug protocol.

While this tool is aimed at helping nurses and others in the medical field, there is still a need for more professionals in this area. CBC News reports that the number of nurses in the country is growing at a faster rate than the population, but more doctors, nurses and medical administrative professionals are still needed.

Canada's elderly population is growing and more nurses are needed to help care and provide services, whether it be in nursing homes, hospitals or other healthcare facilities. Their jobs may be made easier with the help of new technology and medical tools.

Students who are interested in pursuing healthcare careers can enroll in healthcare courses like those in the Practical Nursing program at Vancouver Career College. For more information, fill out the form on the right.
