Keeping Balance in Your New Career

Congratulations on taking the first steps towards a new career. Your resume, skills and knowledge are expanding and change is on the horizon. One of the best things you can do for yourself and for your career is to maintain a healthy balance in your work life. Here are some things you can do:

  • Maintain a flexible schedule as much as possible so you can fit things in outside of work like hobbies, sports, meeting friends and spending time with family.

  • Delegate a task where possible if it means spending more free time doing other things.

  • Fit exercise into your daily and weekly routine.

  • Schedule time to just relax.

A balanced work life includes taking time to establish routines, schedule breaks, set goals, celebrate milestones and work hard. Any employer will encourage a good work/life balance and your career will benefit from expanding your skills and knowledge outside of work too. A healthy balance equates to always feeling fresh at work and ready to excel in your new career.

Beat the Winter Blahs

The weather can often affect our mood. The cold winters and shorter days mean we spend less time outside soaking up much needed sunshine and vitamin D. This can cause you to feel more blue than usual. So how can we fight the winter blahs? Exercise daily, start taking vitamin D and give into the season.

Wrap up warm and enjoy exercising outside, visit the gym or try something new like swimming, indoor rock climbing or hockey. Boost your immune system with vitamin D. You can find it in some foods or you can take a supplement. Spending time outside is good for soaking up some vitamin D too.

Give into the season by enjoying a slower pace this winter. Spending more time indoors should be enjoyable. Play games, share in a new hobby, take a class or just catch up with the people in your life. Surrounding yourself with friends and family who make you smile and laugh are sure ways to beat the winter blahs.

Massage and Mental Health

Massage is not just a method used to assist in relaxation but has been found to be effective in helping a wide range of patients including those in intensive care, childbirth, and even cancer patients. There’s also evidence that massage therapy has mental health benefits as well. Surprising to some, massage therapy is used to reduce stress and encourage relaxation, as well as a treat different forms of mental health illnesses and disorders.

Massage provides significant benefits to those who deal with anxiety, panic attacks and even depression, but is just as effective at helping ease tension after a particularly stressful time at home or the office. During high stress times, like the holidays, a good massage may be what our bodies and minds need most.

Because massage is effective in reducing muscle tension and pain, it also increases blood circulation, which helps to prevent stress-related injuries. Better blood flow means a healthier heart, more energy and increased productivity in daily activities which all contribute to positive effects on your mental health.

Making a Difference!

This past holiday season, staff and students across the province  joined together to collect food for their local food banks. Did you know that nearly one million Canadians were helped by a food bank in 2011? That means one in every 30 people in the country have experienced a time where they were unable to afford the basic necessity of food.

We had a terrific show of holiday spirit and community support this year! So many of our staff and students pitched in, raising hundreds of pounds of food, much needed monetary donations and various other charitable contributions to non-profits in their cities. We recapped all contributions on Facebook, so be sure to check it out!

Thank you to everyone for your donations and support – together, we really can do make a difference!

How to Find More Time for Your Family

With school, work and the many other priorities we have on a day to day basis, it may seem difficult at times to find time for our families. It helps to remember that the reason we do most of the things we do is because of our family, so finding time to spend with them should always be at the top of the list of priorities.

When trying to find more time for family, the most important step is to set aside specific family time. Sometimes we have to make sure we do certain things and family time is one of them. Pencil it in on the calendar, designate a specific block of time and don’t fill it in with anything else. This way, family time becomes part of the routine and isn’t scheduled last when there isn’t any time left.

If we determine a set date and time that is specifically for family and do not veer from the schedule, we are guaranteed to give them the time they deserve. Whether it’s movie night, an afternoon of board games or a trip to the park, quality time with family will help take your mind off the other stresses of life.
