Practical Nurses in High Demand

There’s a good reason why the Practical Nursing program at Vancouver Career College is popular. The fifty-one week health care diploma program focuses on the fundamental knowledge and practical clinical experience needed for jobs in nursing positions in hospitals, nursing homes and a range of other facilities.

As the second-largest regulated health care profession in Canada, licensed practical nurses (LPNs) have gone from auxiliary workers to accredited healthcare practitioners. Technological advancements, increased patient complexity, enhanced responsibilities, greater accountability, changes in scopes of practice, changes in healthcare delivery and evolution of patient-specialized care programs have created a need for hands-on training programs like the one offered at Vancouver Career College.

In 1996, the Council of LPNs in B.C. was designated under the Health Professions Act and changed its name to the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of BC (CLPNBC). The organization established a code of ethics and standards of practice for LPNs in the province and ensures the education, testing and licensing of LPNs meets the established standards and competencies for practice.

In addition, Practical Nursing graduates have several employment options to explore after earning their diplomas. Along with hospitals and long-term care facilities, nurses may also work in group homes, schools, community health and more. Learn more about the program today!

Canadian Credentials Reaffirm Grad’s Passion for Education

Lindy-Ann Clark was a teacher in Trinidad and Tobago for almost 29 years. When she came to Canada, she needed to validate her credentials in order to continue working in the field.

After some research, she enrolled in the Early Childhood Education program at the Burnaby campus of Vancouver Career College.

She knew that the program would give her the qualifications to work in BC, but she also found that it broadened her skills and reaffirmed her decision to pursue a career in education from years ago.

Lindy-Ann was valedictorian for the Burnaby campus at the 2011 spring graduation ceremony. Currently, she’s working at a Montessori school in Vancouver but she plans to earn a bachelor’s degree and, possibly, teach the next generation of ECE students.

“It’s always about broadening my knowledge and skills so that I can be a better teacher,” she says. “Education is the key for a better life.”

How iPads are Changing the Way We Learn

The education world is buzzing about the increasing popularity and presence of Apple's iPad. The iPad's learning capabilities have captured the attention of education administration, instructors and students who are discovering unique high-tech ways of learning. With a tap, drag and swivel on the iPad's multi-touch screen, you can access multiple apps, lectures, videos, notes, books, and more without having to lug around heavy textbooks or power-up your laptop.

The iPad has become a revolutionary tool to learning in an interactive format. Subjects across multiple disciplines, including math, sciences, languages, medicine, and business, are integrated into apps which can be synched with instructor lessons, homework assignments and tests. At the post-secondary level, iTunes U offers free podcasts, videos and textbooks from the some of the world’s leading universities.

Although some people fear that online or technology-based learning may replace face-to-face learning, many school campuses are advocating a combination of the two. Students can follow along with instructors in the classroom, and enhance their learning with study tips and practice tests on their iPad at home.
