Prep for College With a Student Checklist

So it's time to go back to school, but that also means you need to start putting together a student checklist for all of the tools you'll need in order to be a success. Here are a few things that will help to make sure you excel in the classroom.

  • One of the best back-to-school tips is to have a great note-gathering tool. Students may debate whether a laptop, digital tape recorder or a plain notebook is best, but whatever you choose, you must have something for note taking with you at all times.
  • Another item on the student checklist is a good backpack. Don't scrimp on a backpack or you'll have to replace it every season.
  • A smartphone is now a must. While this may be a big extravagance for some, it will save you money and time in the long run. Apps can be used to find out the best deals on textbooks, be used as handy study tools and will help you keep track of all your appointments, tests and study dates.

Equipped with these back-to-school essentials, your 2011 winter semester will be a success.

Study Tips

After the holidays, you may have fallen out of your diligent study habits and are now facing new classes and challenges. So what should you do in order to get back in the groove and excel in class? Here are some simple study tips for college students:

  • Set up a distraction-free zone and time each day. You need to have a time each night just to study, without the temptations of going out or hanging out with friends and family. You'll need to be away from the electronic distractions of TV, video games, music and your phone as well.
  • Join a study group. There's a chance that no matter which class you are in, someone else in your class may have more expertise than you. Seek those students out and form a study group so you can share your knowledge.
  • When in doubt, take notes. Nothing gives you a better understanding of a topic than taking notes and interpreting what the professor says in your own words. Always keep your notes through the course.

It seems like many students at Vancouver Career College are going green and saving money with these green tips:

  • Walk or bike to school, or use public transit.
  • Pack your lunch in a reusable lunch bag, opt for a reusable metal water bottle, and snack on local fruits and vegetables.
  • In the classroom, use recycled paper, purchase gently-used products and recycle items rather than throwing them in the trash.

Food Bank Collection Update

In December, Vancouver Career College staff and students were challenged to bring in donations for their local food bank - and you all stepped up.

Thanks to your generosity, there are a lot more people in your community who will be able to provide wholesome meals for their families.

Let's carry on this tradition of charitable work in 2011. We'd love to hear your suggestions for worthy causes we should support this year. Whether it's the food bank or a local women's shelter, let us know what you're passionate about.
