Before the work experience post, students complete courses in all three specialty areas, as well as biology, psychology, healthcare and communication classes, in order to determine where their treatment passions lie.
On the job, Rehabilitation Assistants work directly with a Physio, Occupational or Recreational therapist. Some typical job tasks include leading exercise classes, teaching wheelchair mobility techniques, organizing social activities, teaching clients how to care for themselves, organizing meals for patients, transporting clients, developing or providing assistive devices, completing progress reports, repairing equipment and directly assisting the therapist. A rehabilitation assistant may work in long or short term healthcare facilities, at fitness spas, or sports medicine clinics.
To apply for the Rehabilitation Assistant program, you must have completed high school or your GED, along with Grade 12 Biology and Grade 11 Math. Ideal rehabilitation assistants have a genuine desire to facilitate the independence of patients, have a great deal of patience, are in good physical and mental shape, have keen observational and organizational skills and work well as part of a team.
