Vancouver, BC - September 10, 2010 - Community centres play a vital role in the neighbourhoods they serve. Early childhood educators working at these venues have the opportunity to provide programs that guide the social, academic, artistic and healthy development of young children and help moms and dads develop parenting skills. Renfrew Park Community Centre and Thunderbird Community Centre are examples of two Vancouver hubs that provide such programs for preschoolers and their families.
At Renfrew Park Community Centre, the Happy Corner Parent Participation Preschool is an opportunity for parents to assist early childhood educators to deliver lessons and activities as part of their own child's kindergarten experience. ECE professionals provide helpful workshops to parents so they can contribute to their philosophy of children gaining social skills, self-esteem and learning opportunities through play. The Renfrew Centre also offers a variety of other programs to preschoolers and their parents including Head Start Math, Phonics and Fun, Music and Movement, a Community Kitchen, a Dental Clinic and seminars for parents in their early twenties and teens.
Thunderbird Community Centre is staffed with qualified early childhood educators that lead family and children's activities. As part of the Strong Start BC program, ECE professionals offer a drop-in opportunity for parents and their preschool-aged children to come and engage in music, reading and art activities. The objective of the program is to provide parents with encouragement and techniques to foster learning opportunities for their children at home. The Centre's Families on the Move program, allows parents and their kids that do not own a car to go on field trips with other families. Thunderbird Community Centre covers expenses for bus fares and admission prices to attractions. Early childhood educators also run art, baking, story time, physical education, academic and ballet programs for preschoolers.
