Continuous Learning Opportunities - Early Childhood Education

Several options for ECE certification at Vancouver Career College

Burnaby, BC - April 19, 2010 - Vancouver Career College offers an Early Childhood Education (ECE) certificate for those wishing to enter the field of teaching and caring for children at daycares, preschools and other family service centres. Upon completion of the program, students may apply for a license to practice with the Early Childhood Education Registry.

Vancouver Career College also offers two ECE post-basic training options: Infant & Toddler and Special Needs Concentrations. Completing these programs leads to students becoming more specialized, allowing them to advance their career and salary.

Early Childhood Education Certificate

The ECE Certificate is a 43-week program that adequately prepares students to become successful Early Childhood Educators. Course work includes an introduction to the field and licensing requirements; learning how to develop activity plans for art, drama, language arts, music, science, pre-math, social studies and outdoor education;  an extensive analysis of childhood development; and a background in health, nutrition and First Aid Certification. Other courses involve learning effective discipline techniques and providing a safe learning environment. Students will also have the opportunity to learn about themselves, which will in turn make them excellent educators. Finally, the ECE certificate program involves one observational and two work-based practicas.

ECE Infant & Toddler Specialization

In this program, students become qualified to specifically work with children aged three years and younger. Students will learn techniques for working with younger age groups, how to develop activity plans that are suitable for infants and toddlers and complete a practicum under the supervision of a licensed Infant/Toddler Educator.

ECE Special Needs Specialization

In this program, students will learn about accommodations, program planning and care needs for children with behavioural, emotional, intellectual, physical, learning, and mental disabilities. A six-week practicum is also included in this program.

In each ECE specialization program, students complete seven courses including more advanced knowledge in the areas of child development, health and safety and administration, laying the ground work for potentially managing a child care centre one day.  Students may become certified in both areas by completing nine courses and both practicas.
