Vancouver Career College trains pharmacy techs to meet new industry demands
Coquitlam, BC - November 15, 2009 - The role of pharmacy technicians in British Columbia has changed dramatically in the past decade as properly trained professionals continue to be a commodity in Canada and around the world. Vancouver Career College's Pharmacy Technician program helps to train new pharmacy techs, and ensure those entering the field are prepared for all the new tasks they will be required to take on.
"Pharmacy technicians have taken on more and more of the work load of pharmacists over the past ten years because pharmacists are increasingly needed to counsel patients on top of their other duties," says Vancouver Career College Pharmacy Technician instructor, Marinela Guira. "Now, pharm techs can do almost everything a pharmacist does except recommend/receive a new prescription from a doctor, and do the final check of prescriptions."
As the health care industry adapts to the changes caused by an increasing number of retirements in the field, pharmacy technicians have been required to learn new skills including taking special orders, filing prescriptions and taking inventory of the pharmacy.
"Pharmacy technicians are not just cashiers in the pharmacy," says Guira. "In the past decade, we've become a lot more."
Pharmacy technicians need to be able to pay attention to small details, have strong math skills and be willing to put in a lot of hard work. Those interested in a pharmacy technician career can learn more at http://www.vccollege.ca/View/Programs_by_Campus.
