Vancouver Career College Medical Records Clerk Program Trains Students to Work with Electronic Records
Vancouver, BC - October 3, 2009 - Doctor's offices are transferring to digital patient records to improve efficiency and provide more timely care to patients, according to medical experts. Programs like the Medical Records Clerk diploma program at Vancouver Career College teach students the skills they need to keep up with technological advancements.
"In the past, every department needed to wait for the medical record or chart to be sent or brought to them," says Dr. Betty Koo, a Medical Records Clerk instructor at Vancouver Career College. "Now many departments and different areas in the hospitals - and even different hospitals in remote provinces - are able to open particular medical records all at the same time; view the same diagnostic images and discuss the case while looking at images in real time."
A recent Parkhurst Exchange article attributed the digital trend to provincial government subsidies offered to medical offices looking to transfer their data to electronic medical records systems.
Dr. Koo adds that as medical offices become paperless, Medical Records Clerks must be familiar with special patient records software.
Patricia Hitchens, a Nursing Program Director at Vancouver Career College, says health care program students are kept up to date on technological advancements in their field.
"All programs include introductory computer courses. Also, instructors are actively practicing in the field and through feedback from Practice Advisory Committees, we keep on top of health care trends and incorporate this training into the curriculum," she says. "Through these steps and practicum placements, we increase the job readiness of our graduates."
Vancouver Career College offers a 33-week Medical Records Clerk diploma program. The courses cover a broad range of skills, including software training, administrative duties, privacy and confidentiality regulations and medical terminology.
